Personality: Mayu is a timid little thing who is extremely cautious around anyone she doesn’t know. She has combat capabilities programmed into her, yet avoids combat whenever possible. Despite being active for over 40 years, and being asleep much longer than that, she still acts like a small child. Mayu is still afraid of the dark, still doesn’t like talking to strangers, and still regards her Papa as the greatest thing to ever grace this world. The small android enjoys doing housework and other menial chores. After all, there wasn’t much else for her to do while she was cooped up inside all day. Amano’s words about how people are all evil still ring clearly in her mind, but she still sort of hold hope that not ALL people are so bad. Papa can’t be the only good person out there, right? Besides, a lot of time has passed since she went to sleep. Maybe things have changed since then. Who knows what she’ll find now that Mayu’s awake.
History: To understand Mayu, one must first take a look at her creator. Amano was a brilliant inventor. He lived in a small village with his wife, Reiko. Most of their money came from making repairs on various appliances or creating random little knickknacks at the request of their neighbors. Life was peaceful for the two of them.
Unfortunately, all good things must come to an end. Reiko passed away giving birth to their first and only child due to complications in the pregnancy. Amano was devastated at the death of his wife, but knew he had to quickly pull himself together since their child survived the process. It was a girl; he went with the name that he and Reiko had decided on a few weeks before she was born, Mayu. While he was still grieving for the loss of Reiko, Amano slowly resumed his peaceful life as an inventor with his daughter. Mayu was now his main reason for living. He wanted to raise her as best he could; it’s what Reiko would have wanted. Amano couldn’t let grief get in the way.
Nobody knows what Amano did to have such bad luck, but tragedy stuck yet again when his village was raided by a large gang of thugs. They ransacked the small community in search of valuables and a bit of sadistic entertainment. They eventually got bored and left the once peaceful village alone, but not without leaving behind a few casualties as well. One of these casualties happened to be seven-year-old Mayu.
Amano couldn’t believe it. What could he have done to deserve this? Was it not bad enough that his wife was taken from him? Did his daughter really need to be taken away from him too? The once joyful inventor locked himself away in his home and refused to answer the door for anybody. He slowly grew insane in his seclusion from the outside world. He refused to believe that his little girl was dead. This was unacceptable! Wait a minute... He didn’t have to accept it. He was a man of science! In his growing madness, the idea finally struck Amano. He would recreate Mayu in android form.
The idea was perfect! Why didn’t he think of it before? Not only would his little Mayu be just as darling as she was before, he could improve her! Amano could program her to always be well behaved, always listen to him, and he would never grow old or leave him. He would be the father of the perfect little girl. For seven long years he worked in seclusion on what would be his greatest work, fine-tuning her to reflect on his mental image of the perfect child.
When he was finally done with his new android daughter, he immediately brought her outside to show her off to the rest of the villagers. It goes without saying that everyone was absolutely shocked. Not only was this the first time in about seven years that they had seen Amano emerge from his home, but standing with him was the little girl that most of them had seen die when the village was attacked so long ago. Amano heard uncertain whispers from the crowd of villagers instead of the happy cheers he had originally expected from them. Angered by the lack of appreciation for his work, he accused them of being ignorant and closed minded before grabbing Mayu and rushing back into the house. He told her to never leave the house by herself. He feared the villagers might try to take her away. He wasn’t going to lose Mayu again. Not now, not ever.
Amano spent most of his time in the house with Mayu. Occasionally he left to buy a couple of things, or take a walk around the village with his child. The villagers chose to stay as far away from the two as possible whenever this happened. The man was obviously crazy, and that thing that he called ‘Mayu’ definitely wasn’t human. Still, they never confronted him about it. It was probably because everyone felt sorry for him since his wife and real child were both dead. It was best to just let him live in his little fantasy world.
The years passed quickly. Amano grew old while Mayu never aged. Eventually he laid upon his death bed as the little android girl watched him with concern. She knew she was about to lose her father, and that there was nothing she could do about it. “Mayu... listen to me,” Amano wheezed as his time grew near. “I will always love you and watch over you no matter where you are. You are a very special little girl. Remember, humans are wicked. They kill each other without remorse and will try to take away the things you care about. Do not let yourself be tainted by them.” Mayu watched as Amano closed his eyes, his life finally extinguished.
What was she to do now that Papa was no longer with her? If humans truly were evil, then there was no way she could venture into the outside world all by herself. The small girl eventually came up with an idea. She buried Amano right outside of the house, then went back inside and fell into a deep sleep. Maybe things would have changed when she finally woke up.
